Choosing to See

Everything about our new townhome was perfect. The neighborhood, the parks, the windows, the upstairs laundry, the location.

Everything except the view out the back windows.

While I was excited about everything else we would be gaining with the move, I could not stop thinking about that view. Sure, you could see the tips of the mountains from downstairs and the whole range of mountains from upstairs, but not without looking at old railroads tracks, old fences, and warehouses first. I could not stop thinking about it and it really bothered me. I would say to Mark over and over, “Im so excited to move there – except for the view.” I began to pray about it because I couldn’t figure out why it was bothering me so much, and that’s when I heard God whisper, “It’s what you choose to see.”

The view out our back windowsThe view out our back windowsThe next time I was at the house, I looked out the back window and I noticed yellow wildflowers all along the railroads tracks. I noticed the huge expanse of blue sky. And later that night, I noticed a beautiful sunset over the mountains. God was right: I could choose to see the old warehouse and railroad tracks, or I could choose to see the beautiful Colorado sky and sunsets.

A beautiful Colorado sunset A beautiful Colorado sunsetI think this whole season of life for me is going to be like our view out the back windows – we can see everything we want and don’t have, or we can see the good in what we do have. We don’t have acres of green pasture to look out at, but we do have a pretty neighborhood, a beautiful sky, and mountains within driving distance. We don’t have our own animals to milk, but we do have fresh milk delivery once a week. We don’t have a huge garden, but we do have ready access to farmers’ markets and a yard that we can practice container gardening in. I can choose to see that we don’t have our dream home and we don’t have our homestead, OR I can choose to see that God has purposely placed us here, for now, and blessings are overflowing. Just like my view out the back window, it is all about what I choose to see.
